Harley Larson

October 7, 1931 to December 3, 2014

Harley Larson, age 83 of Mohall, passed away on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 in his home.

His funeral services were held on Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the Nero Funeral Home in Bottineau.

Burial was in the Oak Creek Cemetery, also of Bottineau.

Officiating at the service was the Reverend Deborah Berger-Peery. Special music was provided.

Casketbearers were Rhett Larson, Josh Larson, Brandon Larson, Shawn Larson, Andrew Stavem, Chris Larson, Jeff Larson, Chad Bernsdorf, Thomas Graham, Jon Mitchell, and Michael Graham.

Honorary bearers were Howard Beyer, Chuck Amsbaugh, Darryl (Dean) Ryker, Harvey Svee, and his granddaughters.

Military honors were by the North Dakota National Guard and the Bottineau County Veterans.

Harley Leodolph Larson, the son of LeRoy and Helma (Olson) Larson, was born on October 7, 1931 at Bottineau. He was reared and educated north of Bottineau in the Turtle Mountains. On September 1, 1950, he entered the US Army. He was stationed in Japan for a time. Harley was honorably discharged on June 4, 1952.

On October 2, 1953, he married Marlene Beyer in Bottineau. They moved to Stanley for a short time, then returned to Bottineau. In the late 1950's they moved to Bowbells. Harley began working for Calvert Drilling in Williston. They then moved to Glenburn and in 1961 they moved to Mohall. Harley worked for Calvert Drilling when they were bought by Bomac Drilling, then Grace, and finally Nabors Drilling. He worked about 40 years in the oil field, retiring in 1994. Marlene passed away on May 23, 2000. Harley continued to make Mohall his home.

Harley was a member of the Mohall American Legion Post 52, Elks, and the VFW.

He is survived by two daughters, Debra (Art) Brusseau of Langdon, ND, and Jolene (Willie) Graham of Minot; four sons, Steven (Robyn) Larson and Robert (Dawn) Larson both of Mohall, Michael (Terri) Larson and Shane (Suzanne) Larson both of Minot; 19 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; brother, Virgil (Olga) Larson of Carson City, NV; and sister, Dianne (Dean) Ryker of Marysville, WA.

Harley was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marlene; and brothers, Curtis and Darrell.

Donald Medler

April 13, 1930 to December 6, 2014

Donald Medler, age 84 of Bottineau, passed away on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at a Bottineau hospital.

Memorial services for Donald were held on Friday, December 12, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Bottineau.

Cremation has taken place. Chris Blistrub spoke at the service. Special music was provided.

Honorary casketbearers were friends in attendance.
Donald Medler, a son of Otto and Ellen (Swenson) Medler, was born on April 13, 1930 at Lansford. He was reared and attended school in Mohall.

On March 2, 1948 he was married to Annabelle Arneson. This marriage later ended. Donald entered the US Army on January 7, 1952 and was honorably discharged on December 23, 1953. He returned home and worked road construction in North Dakota.

On June 16, 1962, Donald was married to Ethel Beckedahl. They moved to Fargo where he worked at a service station as a manager. In 1968 they moved to Algona, WA where he was a welder. They also managed apartments for a time. They returned to Mohall when his step-son became ill. In 2004 they moved to Bottineau. Ethel died on December 31, 2013. Donald continued to make Bottineau his home.

He is survived by step-children, Gail Halvorson, Richard Beckedahl, Rodney Beckedahl, and Lois Tallent; a sister, Elaine; and many nieces and nephews.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents; wife; three children; seven brothers; four sisters; a step-son; and a step-daughter.

Ferne Paris

Ferne Leah (née Witteman) Paris, 98, passed away on Thursday, December 11, 2014.

She was born on a homestead farm north of Mohall, ND in 1916 to Fred and Leah Witteman. She attended three years of schooling in a one-room schoolhouse where all eight grades were taught. The family of five, which included her brothers, Floyd and Lyle, moved to a small town where better schooling was possible. In 1930, the family again moved to a larger town. Ferne graduated from high school in 1934. She attended beauty school and practiced it for five years.

In 1939 she married Earl L. Paris. One daughter, Barbara Jean, was born to this union. Earl was employed at National Youth Administration and was transferred to Minot, ND, then to Bismarck, ND until World War II broke out. From there the family moved to Vancouver, WA, where he worked in one of the shipyards. They moved to Salem, OR, and from there back to Mohall, ND where Earl and Ferne opened a Ben Franklin Store. Fifteen years were spent there until Earl accepted employment with the North Dakota State Highway Department. Earl and Ferne retired in 1975 and purchased a home on Detroit Lakes, MN, spending 12 years before the winters drove them to Apache Junction, AZ where they lived for 17 years.

Earl died of heart failure in 2004 and Ferne moved to Salem, OR and enjoyed life in Paradise Island Park until her death.

Survivor includes a grandson, Michael.

Ferne was preceded in death by her husband, Earl; daughter, Barbara; and her granddaughter, Patricia.

Lorn Lakefield
October 13, 1945 to December 11, 2014

Lorn R. Lakefield, 69, of Royer Rd. Cascade, MD, passed away Thursday, December 11, 2014 at Meritus Medical Center of Hagerstown, MD.

His funeral service will be held on Monday, December 29th at 11:00 a.m. in Our Savior Lutheran Church, Sherwood. Burial will follow.

Lorn was born October 13, 1945 on the family farm in Sherwood, ND to the late Rene and Leona (Bergerson) Lakefield.

SFC Lorn Lakefield was a United States Army Retiree who spent 18 months in Vietnam. While in active duty, he was an Installation Team Chief I.S.E.C.-CONUS and also retired from the United States Government as a security specialist with defense information systems command.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 239 of Cascade, MD, South Mountain Rod and Gun Club of Smithsburg, MD, and Owl’s Club Inc of Waynesboro, PA.

Survivors include his sons, Stephen Lakefield of Leola, SD, and Kevin Lakefield, Sr. of Cascade, MD; daughters, Coleen (John) Wittmayer of Roscoe, SD, and Ellen Lakefield of Aberdeen, SD; sisters, Grace (Alden) Vannett, and Gladys Lakefield, both of ND; sister-in-law, Renee Lakefield of ND; six grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Lorn was preceded in death by three brothers, Roy Lakefield, Ervin Lakefield, and Roger Lakefield; and one sister, Rose Marie Lakefield.
