John J. Egger
1918-2012
|
WWII veteran John J. Egger, 94, passed away November 14, 2012, in Ellensburg, WA
Born March 27, 1918, to John J. and Eleanor (Backman) Egger in Westhope, ND, John attended school and graduated in 1935. He entered the military in February 1942, and the following year, he married Merna M. Lanthorn, of Portal, ND, on May 18, 1943, in Plentywood, MT.
Merna and her mother moved to Ellensburg when John was assigned to the 82nd Airborne, earning the rank of lst Lieutenant. It was during a practice jump in England that John’s parachute failed to open, but miraculously he landed on top of another paratrooper’s chute. He “caught a ride down” until close enough to the ground to roll off, so that the chute would open full again and not cause harm to his comrade. Suffering major injuries, John returned stateside and spent several years in an Army hospital.
Upon discharge, John joined his family in Ellensburg and began a career as a Rural Mail Carrier for the U.S. Post Office until his retirement in 1973.
John adored his wife of 69 1/2 years and doted on his daughters, his four grandchildren, and his seven great-grandsons, each knowing how special they were to him. He was an avid reader (100 pages a day until a month before his death), a consummate gardener (both flowers and vegetables), a walking encyclopedia, a self-taught handyman, and a great storyteller and humorist.
John and Merna traveled extensively around the United States, spending winters in Arizona and summers in Ellensburg and at their Cle Elum mountain retreat. But wherever the roads led in life, it was always John and Merna together.
To most he is known as John Egger – to those near and dear, he was Johnny, Uncle John, Poppa John, Poppa or Grandpa.
Survivors include wife Merna of Ellensburg, and daughters Karen (Terry) Clem of Bothell, WA, and their son, Steve (Katie) Clem of Portland, OR, and sons Will and Adam, and their daughter, Janelle (Doug) Pinski of Kirkland, WA, and sons Brooks, Cooper, and JT; and Patty (Paul) Adams of Fresno, CA, and their son, John of Fresno, and their daughter, Jennifer (Chris) Palmer of Seaside, OR, and sons Austin and Ryan; in addition to nieces and nephews, and close family friends Jan Paxton and Rosie Clem.
John was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ellensburg.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Hospice Friends or First Presbyterian Church in care of Brookside Funeral Home 101 E 2nd Ave Ellensburg, WA 98926

David Hoskin
1953 – 2012
|
MAXBASS – David Hoskin, 58, Pick City, formerly of Maxbass, died Friday, July 27, 2012, at a Bismarck hospital.
He was born September 13, 1953, in Minot, to Donald and Ellen (Koons) Hoskin. He was raised in Lewis Township, Bottineau County, south of Maxbass and graduated from Maxbass High School in 1973.
David married Maureena Streich, on November 30, 1973. They lived in Maxbass where he worked for the Bottineau County Road Crew. He worked for Martin Construction in Dunn Center and Bergstrom Construction in Antler. In the late 1970s, he and some friend started North Star Construction. He later went into business by himself with North Star Construction, Inc. The company consisted of David; his son, Dale; and David’s nephew, T.J. Streich. He decided earlier in 2012 to hire more to help with the workload and found three guys from California. His company built oil sites, county roads, building pads, tank battery sites and reclaim sites in many locations northwest of a line from Medora to the Peace Gardens.
David was a true entrepreneur. He could look at a project and envision how the finished product should look, and knew exactly how much work was involved to get it that way. He grew and sold enough potatoes to purchase his first piece of equipment. He always planted potatoes, even talking his family into trying to sell 1800 lbs. of seed potatoes this spring. Only 700 lbs. sold; 1100 lbs. were planted. His entrepreneurial mind was always thinking of money making ideas: among them was a hot dog stand, a hot tamale stand or a doughnut stand.
David will be remembered as a political persuader, as a man who made many friends through work and was well liked by many, could never say no to a friend, as one who never had to look for work, believed in an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay and for teaching his family to care for themselves.
David enjoyed hunting, fishing, raccoon hunting, black Dodge diesel pickups, eating goodies, and searching for things on the internet (as long as someone else was running the computer). He looked forward to searching for equipment to buy and sell; a job he wanted during retirement.
Family: wife of 38 years, Maureena, Pick City; children, Dale (Raquel) Hoskin, Maxbass, and Connie Hoskin (Brent Albertson), Minot; grandchildren (Dale and Raquel’s), Aja and Dalton Hoskin; brothers, Raymond (Judy) Hoskin, Minot, Ronald (Terri) Hoskin, Maxbass, Leonard (Deb) Hoskin, Maxbass, Rodney (Shana) Hoskin, Maxbass; sister, Joann (Terry) Kotzer, Glenburn; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
David was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
Funeral: Friday, August 3, 2012, at 4:00 p.m., at English Lutheran Church, Maxbass.
Burial: Graceland Cemetery, Maxbass.
Family Service: Friday, 2:00 p.m., at the church.
Visitation: Friends may sign the guestbook beginning at noon on Friday at the church.
After the graveside service, the family invites all to a barbecue in honor of Dave’s life at the Dale Hoskin residence in Maxbass.

Selmer Nermyr
1909-2012
|
Selmer Nermyr, 102, Las Cruces, NM and formerly of Bella Vista Ark., Minot, ND and Westhope died on July 4, 2012 in a Las Cruces retirement home.
Selmer was born on July 25, 1909 on a farm in Sergius Township of Bottineau County, twenty-five miles from the Canadian border, near Westhope, ND to Herbrand and Margit Lilleslet Nermyr. He was the third oldest in a family of eight children. He attended grade school in the one-room rural Sergius schoolhouse and Newburg High School, graduating in 1926 with four other students, even though he played “hooky” the final three months of his senior year when his older brother became ill and Selmer was needed to help plant the crops. As a young adult he worked on the family farm for several years prior to moving to Minot in the early 1930’s. Jobs were scarce and Selmer had several different jobs, before finding steady work in a creamery where he worked 10 hour days and was paid twenty-five cents an hour.
Selmer married Elizabeth dePlace on October 31, 1935 (Halloween) in Minot and they made their home in Eastwood Park. Their only child, Jim, was born in 1940. In early 1941 Selmer joined his father-in-law in operating a grocery store in Maxbass, ND. When the store burned in 1948 Selmer moved his family to McIntosh, MN where he purchased and operated another grocery store. He sold that store in 1954 and moved his family back to Minot where he was employed at Shark’s Men’s Clothing store for two years before he was hired by the Minot Post Office as a mail carrier. Selmer worked for the postal service for seventeen years until he retired in 1973 after also serving as a postal supervisor and managing the downtown branch office. Selmer and Elizabeth retired in Bella Vista, Arkansas in 1975 where they celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 1985. After an extended illness Elizabeth passed away in 1996. Selmer moved to the Concordia Retirement Home in Bella Vista in 2004 and later to the Village at Northrise Retirement Community in Las Cruces, NM in 2010.
While Selmer was employed by the postal service in the mid-1950’s he built the family’s split-level two bedroom home in Minot, doing almost all of the work himself. The home included a one bedroom apartment and a studio apartment on the lower level.
Selmer liked to go on family driving trips that were usually unplanned. The family drove (with many side trips and much sightseeing) until they ran out of time or money, or both. When Selmer decided he needed a hobby for retirement he began golfing when he was almost 60 years old. He continued to golf regularly (except when he took several years off to care for Elizabeth) until he “retired” in 2002. He was proud of his long drives and in his 80’s was heard to say how he enjoyed out-driving those 50 and 60 year old “kids”. The summer of 2007 was special for Selmer when he attended a family reunion in Minnesota where he celebrated with three sisters, a brother and many relatives. During his retirement he especially enjoyed walking outdoors and, after moving to New Mexico, viewing the nearby mountains. He also enjoyed playing cards and was an excellent (and lucky) cribbage player.
Selmer’s loving family includes his son James (Judith) Nermyr of Las Cruces NM; grandchildren: Tamera Nermyr of Plymouth MN, Michelle Winters of Phoenix AZ, John Nermyr of Richfield MN and Anthony Nermyr of Plymouth MN; great grandchildren: Lindsay, Tyler, Charles, Jack, Nicholas and Maxwell Nermyr all of the Minneapolis area; siblings: Lillian Jespersen of New Hope MN and Palmer Nermyr of Westhope; and numerous nieces and nephews.

James Ruelle
1928-2012
|
James Ruelle, 83, Minot, died early Sunday, January 8, 2012 at home in the comfort and care of his family. Though his lungs gave out, his good humor lasted to the end.
Jim was born in Bottineau in 1928 and his mother died shortly after his birth. Thanks to the care of his father, older brothers and the loving townswomen of Westhope he survived an adventurous childhood. He attended school in Westhope and later attended and graduated from high school at Assumption Abbey. Jim briefly attended barber school, claiming to have dropped out after performing just half a shave on a hobo volunteer, leaving the man, according to Jim, “still in the chair awaiting my return to do the other side.”
A veteran, Jim served as an ambulance driver in the U.S. Army medics during the Korean conflict where he was stationed at the guarded seaport of Trieste, Italy. He spoke fondly of his service, and made it sound like an all-expense paid European tour driving “the brass“ around reconstructionist Europe: “see Rome, Athens, Paris with a cruise down the Danube through Bavaria.” After his honorable discharge he briefly worked as a hardware man, but later chose a career in plumbing. He was working for Cook’s plumbing in Minot when he met Mary Holbach, the niece of his eldest brother’s wife. They were married in 1955. Jim later worked for Hap’s Plumbing in Minot and then finished his career as a pipefitter helping construct various North Dakota power plants, retiring in 1987. He was a member of the plumber and pipefitters Local 300 for more than 50 years.
Jim never took an extended vacation, but for years summer weekends involved his family taking him camping at various lakes, eventually upgrading to a cabin on Strawberry Lake. In his later years, he and Mary traveled around the country visiting their beloved children and grandchildren, looking up old friends and making new ones.
As much as Jim loved to putter around their little farmstead southeast of Minot, a couple of years ago he and Mary simplified things by moving into town. There Jim, always a lover of trains, would patiently count and identify the trains moving through Minot from the vantage point of his living room overlook on south hill.
James is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Mary (Holbach), their six children and their spouses: Linda & Keven Hayhurst, Grafton, WI, Patrick and Kimberly (Breding)Ruelle, Overland Park, KS, Carole and Rick Sanders, New Hope, MN, Mark and Sandy (Moore) Ruelle, Tecumseh, KS, Jim and Sonya (Andersen) Ruelle, South Jordan, UT, & Joan and Todd Ristau, Roanoke, VA; 13 grandchildren; one great grandson. He is also survived by his older brother, Fr. “Jerry” Ruelle, Assumption Abbey, Richardton, ND; sisters- and brothers-in-law: Esther Ruelle, Patricia (Donald) Hill, Laverne O’Neill, Karen (James) Steffen, Diane (Roy) Hyslop; numerous nieces and nephews.
His eldest brother, William C. (“Bill“) predeceased him.
Mass of Christian Burial: Saturday, January 14, at 12:30 p.m. in Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot.
Vigil Prayer Service: Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
Visitation: Friday from 1:00 -4:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot and from 5:00 -7:00 at the Church prior to the prayer service.

Dorothy Diane Spence Culbertson
1947- 2011
|
A funeral was held to celebrate the life of Dorothy Diane Spence Culbertson at 2 p.m., Monday, Aug. 8, at the Waskada United Church, with Rev. Dwight Rutherford and Glen Whetter officiating. Pianist was Mrs. Donna Millar.
Active Pallbearers were: Larry McKillop, John Bell, Ted Artz, Raymond Clark, Don Bell and Ronnie Wyman.
Internment was held at the Goodlands Cemetery, Goodlands, MB.
Dorothy Diane (Spence) Culbertson was born on March 24, 1947 at Deloraine, MB. She was the second eldest daughter of Peter and Louise Spence of Waskada, MB, Canada. Dorothy spent her life growing up on the family farm northeast of Waskada, in the Mimosa District, with her siblings: Lillian Downey, Sharlene Bennie and Royden Spence. Throughout her early life Dorothy enjoyed all aspects of farm life and all that living on the farm entailed. She especially had an interest in horses, and spent many hours pleasure riding with her siblings and school friends.
Dorothy attended grade and high school in Waskada. From there she attended the North Dakota School of Forestry at Bottineau, N.D., where she was enrolled in the RN nursing program, St. Andrew’s School of Nursing, from 1965-1968. During her time at college, Dorothy made many lifelong friends, with whom she still kept in contact with today. Upon her graduation from nurse’s training, Dorothy worked as a nurse at the Deloraine and Melita Memorial Hospitals.
On June 14, 1969, Dorothy married Thomas Blaine Culbertson, of Goodlands, at the Waskada United Church. To this union, three daughters were born: Hope (deceased in February 1971), Jodie Jo-ann (September 1972) and Robin Nicole (January 1976). Dorothy, Blaine and their family made their home in the Coultervale District on a mixed grain and cattle farm, the Bar 7 Ranch, where they still reside today. Dorothy chose to put her nursing career on hold to stay home and raise her family and work along side her husband. She was actively involved in her community: as a member of the Coultervale UCW, and Coulter/Coultervale church member. Dorothy also enjoyed singing in the choir and taking part in church cantatas.
Dorothy was always involved in her children’s lives, and instilled in them the value of an education. Many days were spent running to skating lessons, 4-H, and school activities and swimming lessons.
Once her children graduated from high school, Dorothy took her RN refresher course at home and began working as an RN at the Westhope Home in July of 1990, where she was employed for 20 years. She thoroughly enjoyed meeting/working with her new colleagues and caring for the residents of the home. The residents always called her “the little Canadian Nurse.”
Dorothy enjoyed working on the farm, but she especially enjoyed spending time at her lake cabin at Lake Metigoshe in the summer and riding on her pontoon boat, or as she would put it “just sitting and smelling the mountain air.” Summers would also mean a weekend or two at the North Dakota State Fair in Minot.
Once her grandchildren came along, they became her world and she loved each one of them with all her world and she loved each one of them with all her heart. Shane Thomas Culbertson, Sydney Paige Kersten and Bailey Madison Culbertson were so special to their grandmother, and she was very proud of them. She tried to attend as many of their activities as she could and loved every minute of it.
Another addition to her family, whom she dearly loved, was her son-in-law, Jason Kersten. She always held a special place in her heart for him and loved to raze him about the Canadian-American Hockey Rivalry. All in good fun of course. Things could get a little tense in the two households, especially during the Olympics when both countries were playing for the gold. She was a true Canadian girl who was proud of where she came from.
Dorothy’s love of travel took her to many corners of the world, most notably were her trips to Tokyo, Japan, Hawaii and her most recent trip to London and Paris. She had hoped to travel some more, but this was not meant to be.
Dorothy retired from nursing and spent much of her time working in her yard, looking after grandchildren, traveling (near and far), visiting with neighbors and friends. Dorothy had many health issues over the years, suffering from rheumatic fever as a child and a stroke as a younger woman. Due to the complications from rheumatic fever, this damaged several valves in her heart, which made her more and more fatigued as the years passed. She had so hoped to have an operation which would improve her quality of life, and give her the energy to continue with all the things that she loved to do. Unfortunately, she suffered many complications from her surgery and passed away at St. Boniface Hospital on Aug. 2 with her family by her side.
Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 42 years, Blaine. Her daughter: Jodie (Jason) Kersten and their daughter Sydney, her daughter Robin Culbertson and her son Shane and daughter Bailey. Sisters: Lillian (Lynn) Downey and their children; Peter (Marcia), Corsen and Lexi, Loretta (Brent) Crowe, Jaycee, Jacquie and Jillian. Sharlene (Tom) Bennie and their children – Tom Jr. (Tanis) – Hunter, Hilary, and TJ, Rebecca (Troy) Mayes – Ronnie and Sadie, Rosalyn (Scott) Lockie – Laramie, Melayna and Jett. Brother: Royden (Jacquie Wells) Spence and their children – Jesse (Kristen) Spence and Colter Spence. Uncle: Jim (Gaylene) Spence and their children – Dean (Tammy) Spence – Dillon and Danielle, Jamie (Tracy) Spence and Jorja, Ryan (Karla) Spence – Ty and Ashley and Carson (Marlys Minnie) and Joey. Along with numerous relatives and friends. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, Peter and Louise Spence, mother and father in law, Bill and Grace Culbertson, infant daughter, Hope, as well as numerous relatives.
Smith Funeral Home of Deloraine, MB was in charge of arrangements.
Dorothy had a caring and giving nature, and her absence has left a void in our lives which can never be filled. Her family will miss her everyday, but believe that she has gone onto a better place, free from sickness and troubles. Her smile, contagious giggle, hugs and kisses will be missed. We love you, mom.
I’m Free: Don’t grieve for me for now I’m free. I’m following the path God laid for me. I took his hand when I heard him call. I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day, to laugh, to love, to work, or play. Tasks left undone must stay that way, I’ve found that peace at the close of the day. If my parting has left a void, then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, ah yes, these things I too will miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow: I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life’s been full I’ve savored much, Good times, good friends, a loved one’s touch. Perhaps my time seemed all to brief, don’t lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your heart and share with me, God wanted me now, he set me free.
