Archie Byre

July 24, 1931 to May 1, 2016

Archie Kennard Byre, 84, died Sunday, May 1, 2016 in Minot.

His funeral service was held Thursday, May 5, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, Minot.

A Vigil Prayer Service was held Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at 5:30 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Archie Kennard Byre was born on July 24, 1931 on the parent’s homestead in rural White Earth to Roal Johnson Byre and Olga Cecilia (Askvig) Byre. He commented often that he was born on the hottest day of the year “after Ma had baked 6 loaves of bread.” That date still holds the record as the hottest day. He moved to rural Berthold in 1937 and attended Berthold Public School through ninth grade, when he went into farming with his father. He worked construction in the Minot Area for Shirley Construction, and later in Los Angeles, CA with his uncle Alfred Byre. He worked in California until he was drafted into the US Army to serve during the Korean War. After his return from the service he went to telegrapher school and went to work for Great Northern Railroad as a telegrapher working in various locations across North Dakota.

While working in Bainville, Montana Archie met the love of his life, Arlene Mahlen. After a whirlwind courtship they began their married life on September 24, 1959.

In 1962 he went to work for Great Northern Pipeline (later Portal Pipeline) where he worked until his retirement in 1993. That job took them to Maxbass, ND where he raised his family on a farm north of the town. After their retirement they spent their winters travelling south to Deming, NM and later Yuma, AZ, and their summers in North Dakota on the farm. They were able to travel to Norway and see the birthplace of his parents, including the church where his mother was baptized. They enjoyed their camping days and retirement memories a lot, taking many trips with his sisters, Ruthie and Evelyn.

Archie was a member of the American Legion, VFW, and Knights of Columbus, and served on the township board and school board for Maxbass.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Arlene Byre; children, Belinda (Mark) Vollmer of Minot, Archie Byre, Jr. of Maxbass, Royal (Renae) Byre of Burlington, Everett (MiSuk) of Gaithersburg, MD, and Eric (Kimberly) Byre of Stephen, MN; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, with another coming in July; siblings, Ruthie Rauschenberger, Ronald (Karen) Byre, and Marlene (Dick) Muse; sister-in-laws, Eunice Neshem, JoAnn (Paul) Picard, and Donna (Gib) Elkins; brother-in-laws, Joe Mahlen, Gordon Braaten, and Andy Eshenko; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Archie was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Jenny Eshenko, Evelyn Rauschenberger, and Phyllis Braaten; his brother, Walter Hagen; parent-in-laws; brother-in-laws, Ralph Mahlen, Leonard Rauschenberger, Bill Rauschenberger, and Gerald Neshem; and special aunt and uncle, Petra and Alfred Byre.
