Mavericks win their Homecoming game against the Braves 22 to 8

The Mohall Lansford Sherwood Mavericks hosted the Parshall/White Shield Braves for their 2014 Homecoming game held at the Sports Complex in Mohall. Kickoff was at 7:00 p.m., with the Braves kicking off to the Mavericks.

MLS got on the scoreboard first, as they scored the lone touchdown in the first quarter, when Trevor Evanger scored on a 4 yard run, and Connor Brackenbury ran the pigskin in for the two point conversion to make it an 8 to 0 game.

The two teams battled back and forth in the second quarter and with 1:11 to go in the half, Monty Good Bird caught a 28 yard pass form Justin Roberts for the Braves’ first touchdown of the night. The two point conversion run failed, allowing the Mavericks to hold an 8 to 6 lead at the half.

MLS increased their lead to 14 to 6 with 2:56 to go in the third quarter, when Connor Brackenbury called his own number and punched the ball into the end zone from 1 yard out (pass failed).

With 9:39 to go in the fourth quarter, the Mavericks scored again, as Jesse Mott rushed for a 26 yard touchdown. The two point conversion was good, as Brackenbury found Statler Olson in the end zone with a pass. MLS now lead 22 to 6. However, Monte Good Bird tackled the Mavericks in the end zone for a safety with 3:18 to play, giving the Braves 2 more points, making it a 22 to 8 game. That would be how the game ended, as the Mavericks held on for the Region 3 nine-man conference win.

For the game, MLS finished with 16 first downs, and were penalized seven times for a total of 64 yards.

Passing: Connor Brackenbury completed 6 of 10 passes for 34 yards and threw one interception.

Rushing: Jesse Mott lead the MLS team, as he had 15 carries for 185 yards and one touchdown; Trevor Evanger had 19 carries for 138 yards and one touchdown; Tanner Driscoll had 1 carry for 22 yards; Connor Brackenbury had 12 carries for 6 yards and 1 touchdown; Trey Holsten had 1 carry for 3 yards; and Mason Nehring had 3 carries for 2 yards.

Receiving: Talon Thompson caught 2 passes for 20 yards; Cole Feland had 1 catch for 7 yards; Trevor Evanger had 1 catch for 5 yards; and Statler Olson had 2 catches for 2 yards and 1 touchdown.

Tackles: Trevor Evanger had 17, Statler Olson 9, Randy Kelly 6, Talon Thompson 5, Cole Feland 4, Jesse Mott 4, Connor Brackenbury 3, Zavure Frech 2, Mason Nehring 2, Trey Holsten 2, Cole Southam 1, Beau Driscoll 1, and Tanner Driscoll 1.

Sacks: Statler Olson had 1.

Kickoff and Punt Returns: Cole Feland had 5 for 173 yards; Jesse Mott had 2 for 77 yards; and Connor Brackenbury had 1 for no gain.

The win improved the Mavericks to 2 and 3 in Region 3 play.

This past Friday, September 26th, the Mavericks traveled to Kenmare to take on the Honkers for their Homecoming contest. MLS was able to fight off the Honkers for the 24 to 22 win. A complete wrap up of this game will appear in next week’s issue of the RCF once the stats are received.

Next action for the Mavericks will be this Friday, October 3rd, when MLS will travel to Drake/Anamoose for a Region 3 game. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m.

MLS defeats Glenburn 3 to 1
in District 12 match at Glenburn

Glenburn hosted the MLS Mavericks on Thursday, September 25th for a District 12 volleyball match.

MLS tied things up at 2 to 2 in the first set and then never trailed, as they went on to win 25 to 16. In the second set, MLS took an early 9 to 5 lead, and then saw the Panthers knot up the score at 10 all. But the Mavericks re-grouped and pulled it together to take a 17 to 10 lead, before going on to win 25 to 13. Set three was a barn burner, as the teams were knotted seven different times and the lead changed hands nine times. But in the end, it was Glenburn who prevailed by a score of 26 to 24. The Lady Mavericks came back in the fourth set and won that match by a score of 25 to 13 for the 3 to 1 match win.

MLS evened their district record at 1 and 1, and Glenburn’s district record stands at 1 win and 2 losses.

Last night, Tuesday, September 30th, Glenburn was in Berthold for a district match with Lewis and Clark/ Berthold, and MLS hosted Surrey for a district match. Results of those matches were not known by press time.

Next match for the Panthers will be Tuesday, October 7th when they host Minot Ryan. Match times are 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. The Lady Mavericks will continue their district play on Thursday, October 2nd when they will host Our Redeemer’s. Match times will be 5:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m., and 7:00 p.m.

Glenburn participated in the Devils Lake Tourney this past Saturday, September 27th
The Lady Panthers from Glenburn were in Devils Lake on Saturday, September 27th for a volleyball tournament. Their match results were as follows:

They split with Midway. Midway won the first set 26 to 24, and Glenburn won the second set 25 to 10.

Glenburn also split with New Rockford-Sheyenne. The Panthers lost the first set 22 to 25, and then won the second set 22 to 18.

Their third match was against Rolla, with the Bulldogs beating the Panthers in two straight sets by scores of 25 to 20 and 25 to 22.

The Lady Panthers then again matched up with Midway in tournament play and got revenge, as they defeated Midway in two straight sets. Scores were 25 to 7 and 25 to 9.

Glenburn was then eliminated from tournament play, as they lost to Grafton 2 to 1. Set scores were 15 to 25, 25 to 22, and 6 to 15.

MLS at Lewis and Clark/Berthold

On Tuesday, September 23rd, the MLS C-team and junior varsity volleyball team were in Berthold for two matches.

The C-team match was won by the Bombers, as they defeated the Mavericks in two straight sets. Set scores were 25 to 15, and 25 to 23.

Lewis and Clark/Berthold also won the junior varsity match, beating the Lady Mavericks 2 sets to 0. Set scores were 25 to 18, and 25 to 13.
