Sara Sakshaug

January 14, 1921 to April 19, 2016

Sara Odessa Sakshaug, 95, passed away Tuesday evening, April 19, 2016 at her home with her two daughters by her side.

Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, Fargo, ND. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Fargo, ND.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 29, 2016, at Hanson - Runsvold in Fargo, ND, with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.

Sara was born January 14, 1921 in Quincy, Florida. She grew up in Quincy with her parents, Thomas Jay and Jessie Middleton Yon Peacock, her two brothers, TJ Peacock Jr. and Billy Yon Peacock, and her two sisters, Helen Stokes and Betty Lou Cost. She graduated from the local Quincy High School. During WWII she was working for Western Union out of Gainesville, Florida when she met the love of her life.

She married Thomas Magnus Sakshaug on August 1, 1946 in Folkston, Georgia, and moved to Fargo, North Dakota, where she worked at the NDSU dining center and a grocery store in downtown Fargo. She then became a housewife. Tom and Sara raised five children. Thomas passed away in the winter of 2000 and she remained in her Fargo home until this day.

Sara was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt. Her favorite pastimes were when she was with her family, which included her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Her home was a stopping point for many visitors. She was very interested in sports, including the NDSU Bison, Twins, Vikings, and Minnesota Timberwolves. She was devoted to her church, Peace Lutheran of Fargo, and NDSU. She enjoyed trips from Quincy, Florida all the way north to Sherwood, North Dakota throughout the years visiting relatives of her and Tom’s. She enjoyed swimming, bowling, traveling, camping, and visits to the beach. She liked baking and made the best cake with chocolate frosting, brownies, beef stroganoff, and all loved her homemade buns. She had a wonderful sense of humor. Sara was a sweet “Southern Belle” and everyone that came into contact with her…loved her. She was all about the family and proud of every last one of them.

Survivors include her children: William (Tara) Sakshaug, Robert (Vicki) Sakshaug, Richard (Cindy) Sakshaug, Margaret (Lowell) Hamrum, and Shirley (Paul) Strand; sister-in-law, June (Arnold) Sakshaug; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Sara was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers; three nieces; three nephews; a great niece; and several in laws.
