Area Community Foundations award grants for 2014 year

The Sherwood/Antler Community Foundation proudly announces the Renville County Gun Club as their 2014 grant recipient winner. The Renville County Gun Club was awarded $470.00, which will allow them to make some updates to their gun club kitchen facility.

The Mohall Community Foundation proudly announces the Renville County Historical Society as their 2014 grant recipient winner. The Renville County Historical Society was awarded $1,532.00. which will be used for building renovations and safety improvements.

All contributions and bequests received by the area foundations are placed into a permanent endowment fund. Earnings from the fund will be used to support projects or programs in the Sherwood/Antler and Mohall area as determined by a board of local residents.

Those wishing to donate to the Sherwood/Antler or Mohall Community Foundations can send their tax-deductible gift to: Renville County JDA, Attention Kristy Titus, P O Box 68, Mohall ND 58761. Please make checks out to the appropriate area foundation. All gifts to the fund are tax deductible to the full extent of federal and state law and gifts of all sizes are appreciated and welcomed.

MLS Dollars for Scholars awarded $1,000 donation from Bank of ND

Nathaniel Buynak and Ali Bahl of the Mohall Lansford Sherwood (MLS) Dollars for Scholars attended the seventh Annual North Dakota Dollars for Scholars Conference held in Bismarck on Saturday, October 25th, 2014.
Chapter representatives learned about volunteer recruitment, endowments, and fundraising. For attending the conference, the Chapter will receive a $1,000 donation from Bank of North Dakota (BND).

North Dakota Dollars for Scholars (NDDFS) has 72 community chapters in the state. Bank of North Dakota provides a State Director and operational support for local chapters. Since the first chapter was established in Grand Forks in 1962, NDDFS has raised over $30 million and helped nearly 23,800 students.

MLS Dollars for Scholars organization expressed their appreciation to all of the sponsors for the MLS home volleyball and football games. A reminder that sponsorships for girls’ and boys’ basketball games will be starting shortly. Shania Brackenbury winner of this year’s Kevin Thom Memorial Classic Scholarship


Shania Brackenbury, right, a freshman at Dakota College in Bottineau and a member of the Lady Jacks Basketball Team, was the recipient of a very generous $1,000 scholarship from the Thom family in memory of Kevin Thom. Presenting her with the award is Harriet Thom, left, grandmother of Kevin Thom. The award was presented at the Kevin Thom Classic which was held at Dakota College at Bottineau on Saturday and Sunday, November 1st and 2nd. Also on hand for the presentation, but not pictured were Kevin’s sister and grandfather, Kylie Thom, and Marvin Thom. Shania is the daughter of Wayne and Clarissa Brackenbury of Mohall.

The tournament, which was known as the Lumberjack Classic, was renamed this year to the Kevin Thom Classic in memory of Kevin, a former Lumberjack basketball player. Thom played for the Jacks during the 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 seasons. Wayne Johnson, Head Women’s Basketball Coach at DCB stated, “Kevin was a great teammate with a real passion for basketball, especially Jacks basketball.” Kevin was the son of Robert Thom and Lori (Allen) Deschamp.

The Lady Jacks opened up their season with two wins at the Kevin Thom Classic as they defeated the Canadian Mennonite 86 to 51 on Saturday and then downed Providence College (Manitoba) on Sunday afternoon 67 to 48. Shania Brackenbury scored 8 and 3 points respectively in those two games. Then on Wednesday, November 5th the DCB Lady Jacks were in Belcourt to play Turtle Mountain Community College and defeated them 76 to 61. DCB improved to 5-0 with their two wins at the Lake Region Classic on Saturday and Sunday, November 8th and 9th. On Saturday they defeated an alumni team from Lake Region State College 86 to 73, and then topped the junior varsity squad from Jamestown College 73 to 61 on Sunday.

Kids’ Bingo to be held in
Mohall Sunday, December 21st

The Mohall Chamber of Commerce will again be hosting the annual Kids’ Bingo on Sunday, December 21st in the Multi-Purpose Area at the MLS - Mohall School. Any businesses or individuals who would like to help with prizes for Kids’ Bingo, are asked to get them to Clarissa Brackenbury at Citizens State Bank in Mohall by the end of the day on Wednesday, December 17th.

Kids’ Bingo is open to all children ages 12 and under and will begin at 1:00 p.m. A parent or guardian must accompany any children who may need help with Bingo.

Several games of Bingo will be played and all children will go home with at least one prize. Santa will also be there to visit with the children.
