Robert Savelkoul

March 9, 1942 to October 19, 2014

Robert Joseph Savelkoul, age 72, a Lansford area farmer, lost his battle with cancer on October 19, 2014 in Mesa, Arizona.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, October 27, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church, Lansford, ND.

Burial took place at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Lansford, ND.

A Vigil Prayer Service was held Sunday, October 26, 2014 in Thompson Larson Funeral Home Chapel, Minot.

Bob or “Savey” as he was called, was the youngest of six children born to John Henry and Margaret (Bloms) Savelkoul. He was born on March 9, 1942 and lived and worked on his parent's grain and cattle farm in his youth in the southwest corner of Lansford Township.

He graduated from Lansford High School with the class of 1960, where he was a tenacious guard in basketball and was well known by all the referees. He was also one of the younger members in the horse club, the Ghost Riders, in the 1950’s. His love of hunting and playing cards was learned from his family and his Bloms relatives, who were great Pinochle and Whist players. On Pearl Harbor Day, 1960, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he became a radioman on the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany in the Pacific Fleet. Sadly, he was discharged in 1963 when his father died to continue the family farm.

Bob needed a helpmate and partner to get his operation going and he got just that when he married JoAnn Triplett in Lansford on December 27, 1965. She handled all the details, fed the crew, and adhered to his first rule “the combine never stops”. He also hauled grain and coal, worked construction, and did custom harvesting and spraying for a time. They were happy to raise their three children - Jill, Michael, and Bart in the town where they had grown up. In the spring of 1972, they established a new farmstead on section 10 just south of Lansford. When Bob retired from management in 2005, his son, Bart, expanded the farm site and operated Savelkoul Harvesting. He enjoyed going on a run south with the younger guys to Oklahoma and Kansas. Bob always wanted to work and that made him most happy.

He loved people and he had a true faith in God. He served mass at St. John's as a boy and as a Trustee, and Council Member as an adult. He enjoyed fishing, trap shooting, snowmobiling, and watching his boys' sports and college football. Bob was a proud member of the American Legion Post # 279, and the Renville-Bottineau Crop Improvement Association. He was always ready to try new crops and new varieties. He was one of the first in the area to raise canola.

Bob shared his smile with all those he met, and when he did, they became an instant friend. He loved having a dog with him to be his pal. In 2000, he and JoAnn began going to Arizona and staying longer each year as he decided he didn't want to be cold. They made many new friends there and he was a member of the Leisure World Poker Club and the Dakota Club. Folks there called him “The Bob” as he stood out from all the rest.

Recently, he and JoAnn began spending their summers at Lake Metigoshe. There he and the grandchildren enjoyed fishing and just hanging out on the lake. As always, Bob quickly made friends of his new neighbors. His children and grandchildren were a great source of pride for him, and JoAnn’s devotion to him gave him peace in his final days.

Bob is survived by his wife of 49 years, JoAnn; his son, Michael (Kelly) Savelkoul of Waukesha, WI, son, Bart (Andrea) Savelkoul of Lansford, and daughter, Jill (Sedi) Halvorson of Oxbow, ND; brothers, Jack (Theresa) Savelkoul of Lolo, MT, and Dale (Arnola) Savelkoul of Minot; sisters, Lenore (Michael) Sullivan of Millersburg, MI, and Lois Simianer of Merced, CA; six grandchildren; Aunt Bernice Redding of Minot; and several nieces, nephews, and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Margaret; grandparents; brother, Rev. Leonard Savelkoul; and father and mother-in-law, Del and Delores Triplett.

Carole was born April 12, 1925, on the family farm in Chatfield Township, Bottineau County, near Eckman, to Raymond and Edith (Humphrey) Derr. The family later moved to Hurd. She graduated from Lansford High School in 1943.

She married J. Vernon Asheim on February 21, 1945, in a double wedding ceremony with George and Dorothy Coleman, at the Strother Army Air Field Chapel in Arkansas City, Kansas. They lived in Galveston, Texas, and Topeka, Kansas, while Vernon served in the Army Air Force. While Vernon served as a P-47 Fighter Pilot in World War II in the CBI in Calcutta, India, Carole returned to Bottineau and worked at the Bottineau County Courthouse.

When Vernon returned from overseas duty, Carole joined him in San Diego, California. Vernon was later discharged from military service and they moved back to North Dakota and started farming east of Mohall in 1945. They continued farming into the 1990s.

Carole and Vernon loved to travel and dote on their granddaughters. They spent many days and nights at basketball games, piano recitals and everything else the girls were doing. Then the great-grandsons came along and she had them to dote on as well. Carole was a prolific painter and produced many portraits, still life and landscape paintings which now adorn her families’ homes. Carole found great joy in sharing her talent with all. Carole hosted an untold number of family holiday dinners. She always kept close track of everything going on with all of her nieces and nephews and they kept good track of her throughout her life.

Carole was a member of the Renville County Homemakers, Coterie Club, Mohall American Legion Auxiliary, Friendly Neighbors Senior Citizens, Order of Eastern Star, Mohall Art Club, and Community Art Group, Antler. She was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church in Mohall and was very active in church activities. Carole was a history buff and avid catalog shopper. She was very patriotic and loved to talk politics, especially with those who believed as she did.

Carole's loving family includes daughter, Donna Jean (Jeffrey) Rodacker, Minot; two granddaughters; two great-grandsons; brothers, Kenneth Derr, Kansas City, MO, Leonard Derr, St. Peter, MO; sister, Kathryn Haug, Grand Forks; sister-in-law, Marlene Derr, of CO; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents; parents; husband, Vernon Asheim; son, John Richard Asheim; sisters, Lillian Larson, Wilma Belcourt, and Doris “Peg” Oss; and brothers, Donald and Gerald Derr.
